An archived brief for the designated first aider for the UK team on an Acorn camp.

This document is designed to raise some issues to help the team be prepared and aware of potential safety issues and responsibilities whilst serving on a camp abroad. Acorn holds no responsibility for accidents and first aid on camp. Please check emergency procedures and first aid resources with your own sending church or organization and with the Hungarian team leader.

Your potential role and some suggestions:

  • You are responsible for the (emergency) first aid of your UK team of volunteers serving with your church team according to your emergency first aid training.
  • This responsibility is usually for the whole duration of the trip.
  • This should be clear to your team, and your telephone number should be available.
  • We advise each team member to declare any medical conditions made available to those who need it, per GDPR regulations.
  • Ensure you have health insurance details for all team members.
  • Ensure you have emergency contact details for all team members.
  • In case of any accident, emergency or health issue, help as much as possible according to your first aid training.
  • Except in the case of an emergency, you are not expected to administer first aid to the Hungarian campers.

Hungarian leader

  • The Hungarian Church should have someone responsible for first-aid issues. Ensure the whole team know who this is.
  • This person is responsible for the Hungarian campers.
  • They may come to you for advice, but they are firstly responsible for the Hungarian campers.

Equipment and First Aid Resources

  • We advise all teams to have an up-to-date First Aid kit for emergency use. Check contents before travelling.
  • It may be worth knowing where the nearest defibrillator is located.
  • It is also advisable to bring a supply of basic medication e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, allergy tablets etc.
  • These two kits should not be mixed up –tablets/creams should be separate from the official first aid kit, according to official requirements.
  • We advise that you print out First Aid Record sheets found online to fill in if any first aid or medication is administrated. This may be a legal requirement.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE

  • In the event of a serious accident be SAFE:
    • Shout for help (get a first aider or emergency services there as quickly as possible)
    • Approach with care
    • Free from danger (move them to a safer environment if necessary)
    • Evaluate the patient (check airways, breathing, circulation)
  • General EU emergency number: 112 Ambulance in Hungary: 104
  • Make sure the casualty goes to a hospital or a local doctor – stay with them where necessary and make sure a Hungarian leader is also present.
